Odd eggs. Weird eggs. An Egg, within an Egg? Possible?
Is an egg within an egg possible? In my lifetime, I've seen cracked chicken eggs having 2 yolks, eggs without yolks and discoloured eggs. But this, is definitely my first time. According to PoultryHelp.com, an egg within an egg happens when an egg that is nearly ready to be laid reverses direction and gets a new layer of albumen covered by a second shell. Sometimes the reversed egg joins up with the next egg and the two are encased together within a new shell. Double shelled eggs are so rare that no one knows exactly why or how they happen.

The reason I'm even at this site is because yesterday I boiled an egg for a salad and when I peeled it and was cutting it up, I hit something hard below the egg white. Much to my surprise, where the yolk should have been was a perfectly formed smaller egg. When I cracked the smaller egg, there was a little bit of white, but the inner egg mostly contained yolk. It kind of freaked me out and I decided not to eat the egg and threw it away. After researching, I realize how rare they are and I wish I had taken a picture of it. I'm in Arkansas and the eggs were extra large eggs. I didn't notice that it was any bigger than the other eggs in the carton, but they all were pretty big. In the other accounts that I have read of this, it seems there were 2 yolks, but the egg I encountered only had a yolk in the smaller inside egg. Weird, huh?
Are there double yolk eggs that have hatched double chicks?
