I was at Grandpa's yesterday night, and as always, I would sit beside him and hear him speak of his wonderful tales and many life lessons. It has been a habit of mine, to listen, absorb, and learn from an elder's mistakes, teachings, and experiences as much as possible. Because 60++ years on Earth equates to a potentially huge treasure chest of skills/experiences that we can learn from.
I was particularly intrigued when he brought upon the topic of destiny. And I believe most muslims/readers of the Holy Qur'an might have come across this ayat (after translation by Yusuf Ali).
Let us say for example, you are going to sit for an examination. You are nervous, your mind is a wreck and many negative thoughts race through your mind. Will I fail? Are the exams going to be tough? I am so afraid I will forget all the formulas! If you were to re-read the ayat above, you will come to understand that it is you yourself who induce these negativity. Now, what if, you channel these negative thoughts away, and induce positive thoughts? Thoughts like, I can remember this formula, I will remain calm and score well in the exams. Will that help?
You're trying to find a way to solve a problem at work. Your mind is stumped, and you are running out of options. You keep telling yourself, I am stuck! I can't solve this! Nobody can ever solve this! The ayat thoroughly explains this phenomena. You are what you think you are. If you are stuck, you're not doing anything about it because you tell yourself you are stuck, you will definitely remain stuck UNTIL you come to realise that you're not. Tell yourself that it is possible, and only a matter of time before you find a solution. Persevere, work hard, and aim to solve the matter. Will that help?
If you tell yourself you are nervous, you will be nervous. Tell yourself to be happy, you will be happy. Tell yourself to be successful, you will be one. Tell yourself you're lonely, you will be lonely. But remember, you can never tell yourself that you are God and you are capable of changing your own destiny without His will.
I guess it is all in yourself and without us knowing, Allah is teaching us psychology and self-belief to his creations in this particular Ayat. What was written hundreds of years ago is still applicable to daily life here in the 21st century.

Allahu'akbar.

I was particularly intrigued when he brought upon the topic of destiny. And I believe most muslims/readers of the Holy Qur'an might have come across this ayat (after translation by Yusuf Ali).
For each (such person) there are (angels) in succession, before and behind him: They guard him by command of Allah. Verily never will Allah change the condition of a people until they change it themselves (with their own souls). But when (once) Allah willeth a people's punishment, there can be no turning it back, nor will they find, besides Him, any to protect.I will not explain what this meaning means, because there are so many school of thoughts and that there will always be bound to be misinterpretations. But this is what I have to say according to what I have understood from Grandpa.
Surat Ar-Ra'd, Ayat 11.
