PADI Open Water.

Staying at home to rest didn't do much good. I experienced pain in my neck muscles, preventing me from turning my head. I tried Tiger Balm, Koyok, the electric massager and even mom helped me out by massaging. I hope they are aching because of the continuous physical strain of lugging around the dive gear. Cause if it isn't, its a case of 'Salah Urat,' aka, muscle pull (i think).

Anyways, diving was great fun!

The PADI Open Water is a certification that allows one to dive up to a depth of 18 metres with a dive buddy. The lesson comprises of 5 chapters of theory, 4-5 confined water dives (dives in pool-like conditions) and 2-4 open water dives. I did mine with ECO Divers at Pulau Tioman, Malaysia at a cost of RM990 in the August of 2010.

How was it like?

I would say it is challenging. Not physically, but mentally. You need to remain levelheaded and think hard before making your move. For instance, there is this particular drill where you have to take off your mask underwater, put it back on, and clear the water out from it. The instance you take off your mask, you have this huge instinctive urge to breathe through your nose. Now, if you were to do that underwater 18 metres down, you'd drown. Even if your buddies were to get to you in time, surfacing up in that short span of time, can cause you AND your buddies to suffer from lung injury.

Other drills that were carried out include:
  • Take off and put on regulator underwater
  • Breathing through spare regulator
  • Breathing through buddy regulator
  • Clear mask
  • Take off BCD and put back on
  • Buddy swim
  • Buoyancy control
  • Fin pivot (my favourite!)
Here's a video I found on YouTube demonstrating Buoyancy Control and other advanced skills.

If you have a diving certificate, and looking for a dive buddy, join me at the Great Barrier Reef next year!
