GIP India, Day 6, The Vehicles in Pune.

Today was a rather slow day. We had Indian Cultural Understand & Heritage, Indian Philosophy History & Religion, Introduction to Indian Dance Forms and Basic Hindi. Very very dry stuff, so I'll spare you the lecture, and blog about something else.

This post goes to Pa, who would like to know if the Suzuki Swifts here in Pune have been heavily modified and wondering how the traffic in Pune is like.

The answer is simply, NO. And the traffic here is slow-moving.

Suzuki that looks like a Swift.

It is rather impractical to modify the car because the traffic is heavy and one needs to jostle for space with so many other vehicles such as motorbikes (known as Two-wheelers here), Taxis, Auto Taxis, Buses, Lorries and such. All this may cause dents and in fact, most cars on the roads of Pune has scratches in one form or another.

The Lorries are generally colourful.

One thing that I found really amusing are the motorbikes. In Thailand and Malaysia, kapchais rule the streets. Heck, even Batam is covered with cubs. But here in Pune, things are rather different. Hero Hondas rule the streets, and Bajaj/Piaggio Auto Taxis are their subsidiaries. I would say the two most popular bikes are the Hero Honda, and the Bajaj Pulsar.

Another thing I noticed is that most bikers have full-face helmets on. In Singapore, most riders do not generally wear them, except for riders with bigger bikes. Nevertheless, these helmets are nothing like the helmets that we usually see in a sense that they are lighter, and doesn't seem at all promising. heh. They are rather cheap, and seem to be made out of cheap plastic. It need not be strong I guess because traffic is generally heavy, and it is near impossible to hit 80km/h on the streets of Pune.

Ma,

They horn like nobody's business la. But sounding the horn has its advantages especially during overtaking. Indians horn whenever the want to overtake, and I think it is good practice, less the noise. :)
