Day #2 - 3rd July 2010
Location: Jodhpur
Distance Covered: 0 KM
Total Distance Covered: ~1120 KM
Jodhpur was to be a short stop en-route to Jaisalmer. We had about 5 hrs to absorb and do as much as possible. It was hot in Jodhpur. The weather there is so hot, that locals resorted to painting their homes and buildings blue to cool the city. We made our way to Sardar Market after dinner. Didn't shop much, walked around, and made our way to the gargantuan fort that sits atop a hill.
Mehrangarh Fort was closed for the day. boooo. So we went as high up as we could, took pictures, and made our way back down. Be advised that you should NOT climb up to the fort with your full combat load. It is HOT, steps are slippery, and there are vehicles speeding up and down the narrow streets. Do not try this at Jodhpur.
There is really nothing much at Jodhpur in my opinion. Places of significance would be the Sardar Market, the Mehrangarh Fort, and some other palaces that were nearby. Otherwise, I would agree with Jodhpur being called the Gateway of Thar, as it is, an oven set to medium. It definitely set the stage for the heat in Jaisalmer. 5 hours just passed by like that. Nothing much done, and nothing much seen. Spent the rest of the time chilling at a rooftop cafe.
So off we go to the train station an hour before midnight. We got ourselves 5 tickets on the sleeper class. For Boon, Jam and Frau, this will be their virgin ride in the sleeper class. Wish them luck!
